The coins
Among the coins mentioned by Odorico da Pordenone in his “Relazione”, there is “grosso veneto”, called “grosso matapan”. It is a silver piece (Capi IX, XLII). Then there is “fiorino”, Florence’s gold coin, minted since 1252 (Capi LI, LVIII); that piece has impressed the Florentine Lily, hence “fiorino”. There is, finally, “bambaxis paper”, the Chinese money paper manufactured with a cotton basis (Capi XLVIII, LXIII). In the early decades of the XI century, in the Italian peninsula, there were the first revolts against the Empire.
In 1027 Pavia closed the doors to the emperor, after having set fire to his palace; in Ravenna and in Rome there were some fightings between the population and the imperial troops. Milan was now impregnable, because the local bishop was organising the famous “Carroccio”, emblem of the town’s struggle, organized by the League, against the Empire. Conrad II, which had ruled with a stable economy and a healthy currency (MONTANELLI 1965, pages 24-69), since 1028, allowed the right to mint coin to the patriarch of Aquileia, Poppone. The first patriarchal coins were called “frisacensi”, by the name of the Austrian city that first manufactured them. The mint of Friesach, in Carinthia, operated from 1130 with the silver extracted from local mines and then from those in Sankt Veit an der Glan, according to the web-published studies of Riccardo Paolucci.
In Friuli various other coins circulated, like Friesach’s pfennings and those from Vienna. There were also false coins; a mint of counterfeiters was discovered by archeologists in Forni di Sopra, in the province of Udine, in 2005, with ingots, rods and blanks. The coins discovered can be dated between 1172 and 1250. The illegal mint was situated in a castle, in Saquidic, close to Cella, a village near Forni di Sopra, in “Cuol Cjastiel” (Castle’s hill).
Another similar mint has been located in Castello di Toppo, near Travesio, in the province of Pordenone (DE BENVENUTI 1950, SACCOCCI 2010). In the patriarchate of Aquileia probably functioned other clandestine mints, as for example in Trieste and in Aquileia too.
Among other Florentine coins, circulating also in northern Italy, there is "Ferlino", worth a quarter of “denaro” while the "Medal", worth a half “denaro” , was one of the smaller coins in the market.

The population increase and the crusades

The increase of agrarian production, because of the new cultivation techniques, between 1000 and 1300 led to a remarkable development of the population in Europe, but even more so in China. During the two centuries of the neo-Confucianist Renaissance of the Sung dynasty, China's population doubled to reach 120 million inhabitants. China had the richest economy in the world. Some of its products, such as silk and porcelain, were admired in Europe and in the Middle East, so much to inspire the production of Turkish porcelain since the XVI century (SÜMERBANK 1981). In the northern regions of France and Italy, the demographic density approached the levels of 1700 in Europe.
The Crusades lasted from 1099 to 1291. They had a great strategic effect: to expand and to reinforce the commercial presence of Venice in the East. Venice was the base for the Crusader’s naval transport. It gave them credit and demanded in return "favours" of a strategic nature. Thanks to the Crusades, Venice ensured for itself the control over Tyro, Sidon and Acre, in the Holy Land. Then it consolidated, unopposed, the economic domination on Constantinople and on all the traffics of the Dardanelles. Those cities were the coastal bridge heads of the "silk roads”, which, crossing the Black Sea and Caspian Sea’s regions, reached China and India. During the period of Mongolian domination, from 1230 to 1370, these roads were much-travelled and maintained by the Mongolian cavalry (GALLAGHER 1996).

Loans in Friuli

Since the Middle Ages, in Friuli, the continuous flow of stable properties, deriving from wills, increased the estates of the religious bodies. In spite of the legislative interventions of Sant Mark’s Republic (1420-1797) such a situation didn’t change until the Napoleonic epoch. For example the “Regole sui Beni delle Pie Cause, delle Chiese e Fraterne” of 1st March 1772, printed by the Cancelleria di Belgrado (today Municipality of Varmo, province of Udine), by Beneto Ciuran, judge delegated by “Nobil Homo Sier Mario Savorgnan”, besides mentioning other laws of 1605, show the interest rate of 4 % on the perpetual canons, while 5 % is the interest rate on the levels corrisponding to the current mortgage loans (Archivio di Stato di Udine, from now on ASUd, Archivio Savorgnan, envelope 20.1). With the private companies, then, the religious companies, which were receiving in addition cash from several rents and the canonical celebrations, dealt with the credit structure going to satisfy the growing request of financing by several social classes (MONTE 2000, page 253).
In the first half of  the XIII century, patriarchal Friuli was characterized by a certain economic stability, with the impulse of new commercial exchanges with the Italian regions and those of the German world. Certain dealers and Tuscan bankers settled in Friuli, above all from Siena and Florence, with other Hebrew operators specialized in the change of currencies and in the loans, also because other professions were forbidden to them (MENIS 1995, pages 165-166, MANIACCO 2007, page 77). Different pacts, with rents “ad longum tempus”, were drawn up among the noblemen. It is the case of a sale contract of the 1st  February 1220. In it, two noble brothers, Pandolfo and Alberto di Toppo sold to the brothers Angelpretto, Bressa and Varnerio di Ragogna a feudal mountain subjected also to the domination of the Patriarch of Aquileia. Such a mountain, called “Cervia e Caval”, was let out to the men of Ampezzo di Carnia (western mountain area of Friuli), who had to pay every year 125 pounds of cheese, a pair of capons and a sparrow-hawk (BARBACETTO 2000, pages 46 and 306).
Now some religious institutions will be examined even though, according to some scholars only occasionally, the monasteries acted as financers (GELPI – JULIEN-LABRUYÈRE 1994, page 65). From the bookkeeping books of Santa Maria della Cella’s church in Cividale, it appears that, in 1283, the same church owned landed properties in Premariacco and Firmano (ASUd, Congregazioni Religiose Soppresse, envelope 136). In a contract of the Church of Santa Caterina di Cividale, dated 27th December 1290, Bernardo de Carnoleto and Andrea Carnelo are involved. Such surnames (from Carnia) make us understand how important migrations were in the feudal epoch (ASUd, Monasteri Soppressi, envelope 93). The above mentioned Chiesa di Santa Maria di Cividale possessed properties, in 1294, in Cormòns and in Borgnano (ASUd, Congregazioni Religiose Soppresse, envelope 151 bis). In 1297 properties are marked for the same religious institution in Zuccola, Sanguarzo and Rubignacco (envelope 138).
Other contracts are mentioned, from 1301, in the registers of Chiesa di San Daniele in Mereto di Tomba (ASUd, Monasteri Soppressi, envelope 93). Some bookkeeping of  the Monastery of Sant’Antonio in Gemona, dated 1341, tell us that “Carlo di Ragogna lasciò entrata al Monasterio per la valuta di L. (libbre, lire) 19 in circa, con obbligo di una Messa quotidiana ed un Anniversario annuale”. For the sung masses, monks also received payments in kind, wheat, wine, “un mulino” and different plots of land in several parts of Friuli, until Latisana (ASUd, Monasteri Soppressi, envelope 19).
The spices, mentioned by Odorico, who in his journey to Beijing stopped in 1324 also in the Philippines, were so precious in the West, that they substituted currency in certain acts. A feudal investiture in 1346, done by the Patriarch of Aquileia and Federico Savorgnan di Colle near Udine, has the following commercial value “per l’annuo livello di libre due pevere (pepe) et una gallina” (ASUd, Archivio Savorgnan, envelope 71).

Bankruptcy and usury

The development of loans, which entail a certain interest rate, brings an explanation to the phenomenon of usury. The perception of a sum of money on operations not referred to the production or the processing of goods is classified as usury (LE GOFF 2010, page 12). The lender at high interest rates is called usurer. The Church condemned usury shortly after the year 1000. To expiate the sin of usury, the lender can give the ill-gotten gains to the religious institutions. Jacopone da Todi (1230-1306), rich notary and then Franciscan friar, writes that in one of his laudas. In the same work (lauda 42, versi 2-28) there is the description of goods, such as wine, woollen and flax cloths. The earnings and the accumulation of capitals, to improve the land, the vineyard and the property are mentioned. The verb to earn is even used in a title (lauda 75.) Elsewhere the capital is mentioned, or rather the "patremono" (lauda 59, 4.) In a later poem, he writes about someone that "tollea l’usura" (lauda 63, 46), i.e. someone who lent money, who was a usurer. There is also the phenomenon of usury within agrarian deals (lauda 58, 108). Wealth is associated to beauty, then there are other terms as “lo mio guadagnato”, the stereotype of the greedy Jew and “taoliere”, i.e gaming table (lauda 57, 12-140).
It sounds strange that the juridical lexicon of the time appears in a religious poem by Jacopone. The term “instrument”, in fact, indicates a notarial deed, but the term is within a context of human salvation or that of Marian appeal (laude 3, 64; 13; 13).
From then on, in history, a connection is usually made between the financial operator and the great artist, who is commissioned work as means of expiation. Money and beauty started travelling together.
Only after the French Revolution, there is a juridical acknowledgment of credit. With the French Civil Code of 1804, the freedom of trade is sanctioned, as also freedom of credit and the Church will limit itself to condemning the excessive interest rates. Someone went as far as celebrating usury, in the general philosophical atmosphere of economic liberty and moral utilitarianism in the first decades of the 1800 (BENTHAM 1840). Only between the end of ‘800 and the first years of ‘900, the plague of usury was downsized with the development of bank institutions and the birth of the rural credit banks within the co-operative movement (MARTINA – VARUTTI 1996, PECORARI 2011).
The Chapel of Scrovegni in Padua, one of the most important monuments of Italian painting, was frescoed in 1305 by Giotto, who was paid by young Scrovegni, to expiate the usury continued by the usurer father. We need to say that, at that time, there isn’t a clear distinction between the activity of the merchant and that of the banker and the money-changer. The merchant, with the very money cashed from trade can start the activity of money lender, since he has a lot of liquidity in his leather purse. The merchant - banker is a typical figure of the Middle Ages. We can mention the first appearance of the “lettera di cambio”, by which a merchant lends a sum of money to another merchant, through a written act; the loan will be reimbursed later on and elsewhere: usually at the subsequent fair (LE GOFF 2003, page 69).
It is to the Genoese merchants’ credit that they invented "società anomima”; the Venetian financial operators too are credited as having invented the “lettera di credito”, in 1171: from then on the big capitals became mobilized quite easily.
Also the concept of bankruptcy, quoted for the first time in "Constitutum Pisanum" in 1171, was becoming clearer. It is the judicial procedure, with written official acts, by which a remedy is found for the nonpayment of debts of a merchant, causing deadweight losses to the unsatisfied creditors. In the middle Ages the event was public, since the very members of the corporation of the bankrupt merchant where the ones “a rompergli il banco” in the public square, whence the term “bankruptcy“. Further the bankrupt, as a punishment, had to “dare del culo” (vulgar terminology that, today, has a sexual implication), in the sense that he had to bump the bottom on the pavement until blood was spilled. Later he was forced to wear the green cap of bankrupts, whence the expression “essere al verde”. Naturally his name was displayed on “bulletta dei falliti”, whence the idiom: "sono in bolletta" (GIULIANI-BALESTRINO 2001, pages17 – 42)

The "speculative bubble"

The maritime trade between Venice and Egypt was already well established in the VIII century. With the rise of Ayubbid dynasty (1171-1250), it took a leap forward. The Venetians in Alexandria were enjoying particular commercial privileges and owned warehouses, shops and also a church. Unlike other Italian cities, Venice acted as a real state, with ambassadors, consuls, besides the individual merchant confraternities.
The Siena merchants, in the first decades of the XIII century, they had a charge from the Pope to do the bankers and the tax collectors in Rome, in London and in the French cities of the Champagne. (DOUGLAS 2010, pages 36-41 and 111).
In Siena, in the last decades of the XIII century, started the first difficulties of the mercantile economy, like the catastrophic bank disaster of the Buonsignori (1304). In the first years of the XIV century in Tuscany followed the collapse of other banks and financial companies, like the one of Ammannati in Pistoia and the Florentine Faffi - Ferracini and Mozzi (1301-1302), Nerli and Davanzi (1302), Abati-Baccherelli (1303), Ardinghelli (1307), Franzesi (1308) and Pulci - Rimbertini (1310). The indebted merchant on the verge of  bankruptcy, at that time, was causing retaliations among the cities of the unsatisfied creditors and his own, which was known as: the city of bankrupts. To discipline bankruptcies and economic retaliations, in Florence a special magistracy was created in 1308, called “Mercanzia“, to regulate international commerce, as well as the civic economy (ASTORRI 1998, pages 11-35, DOUGLAS 2010, page 124).
From the middle of the XIII century the oriental gold was sacked by Mongols in China and in India. Other gold was extracted from the mines of Sudan and Mali, in Africa, and sold to the Venetian merchants in exchange for European silver hugely overrated (speculative bubble). Silver came from Germany, Bohemia and Hungary, but was all sold to the Venetians who paid in gold. It was the Venetian finance that controlled the “speculative bubble” of the world finance, between 1275 and 1350. Venice blew such a "bubble" in the period following 1340 to strike the economy of rival states (WOOL 1985, DEAN 1990, pages 14, 30, 45 and 64).
The empire of the Mongols was the biggest in the entire history and the cruellest, managing to exterminate with wars and epidemics about 15 % of the world population in about one century. It destroyed all the great and thriving cities, from western China to Iraq, from the North of Russia to Hungary, including trading cities that were Venice’s competitors. The alliance with the Mongols, together with the monopoly of gold from Sudan and Mali, gave the Venetians the monopoly on the monetary circulation in the decades that preceded the financial disintegration of 1340.
The Mongols substituted the gold circulation in the conquered territories in China and in India with silver currency and paper money, mentioned by Odorico da Pordenone. The exchanges with the Venetians took place in Tabriz and Trabzon, Persian trade centers fallen under the Mongols and in the harbour cities of the Black Sea. Here gold was exchanged with silver from Europe. For Venice the slave trade was complementary to the monetary traffic.
There are slaves’ purchase contracts by the Venetian consul in Alexandria until 1415 and 1419. Written in Arabic and kept at the Archivio di Stato in Venice, they were shown in the exhibition “Venezia e l’Egitto”, Palazzo Ducale, October 1 2011 – January 22 2012 (DAL POZZOLO – DORIGO – PEDANI 2011).
The system of alliances set up by the Venetians included not only the Crusaders, the black Guelfo cities and the Angevins, but often also the Papal States, so that the Mongols, rulers of Persia, came to the point of proposing joined Crusades to European Popes and Kings. Thanks to the exclusive right of trading with the Mamluks of Egypt allowed by Pope John XXII, Venice established its monopoly on the exchange of overrated silver and slaves supplied by the Mongols for the gold from Sudan and Mali.

Famines, earthquakes and epidemics

At the beginning of the XIV century in Europe were recorded the first interruptions of the steady increase of crops as well as of population, while in China there was already a real devastation. Great famines are recorded in the years 1314-1317, then in the periods 1328-1329 and 1338-1339.
A deadly epidemic started to spread in 1340. It was not bubonic plague yet but it wiped out 10% of the inhabitants of Northern France and 15,000 of the almost 100,000 inhabitants of Florence. In 1347 the Black death, bubonic and pulmonary plague, coming from China, where it had already exterminated 10 million inhabitants, ravaged Europe.
Towards 1330 the great Tuscan banking companies were on the verge of bankruptcy. With the financial ruin of the great Florentine banking houses of Bardi and Peruzzi, in 1345, a real financial disintegration took place. Edward III, king of England turned against the financial system of the Florentine bankers, since they were getting control of his country and, starting from 1342, suspended their payments, causing the crisis (HUNT 1994).
Today, as in the 1300's, these bankruptcies are the consequence of speculative “financial bubbles” that grow paralyzing production and commerce, i.e. the real economy.
Besides the economic crisis, famines and plagues, on 25th January 1348 a tremendous earthquake struck Friuli. The seism damaged even Venice, Carinthia and Tirol (ELLERO 1997, page 580). There is a XIV century text by a plague survivor, quoted a researcher from Trentino, Alberto Folgheraiter. It is Giovanni da Parma, canon in the Cathedral of Trento. He reported, in Latin, the chronicle of the plague together with other news, on 20th July 1375, with an annotation dated 30th August 1377.  In his “Chronicle”, the canon from Trento also narrates of the 1348 earthquake, that caused the destruction of “de palagio di Messer lo Patriarca di Aquileja in Udine”. In an other memorial (“Malografia Tridentina”), written by the Franciscan friar Giangrisostomo Tovazzi, at the end of the 1700's, the long 1348 tremor which hit Friuli (“durò il tempo di un Miserere”) is mentioned. The earthquake also hit Venice, Cividale and the nearby Lombardy (FOLGHERAITER 1996, pages 23-56).
It is estimated, in conclusion, that in the period between 1300 and 1450, as a result of the economic crisis, the natural cataclysms and the epidemics, the European population was reduced by 35-50%, while the world population lowered by 25%.

Denâr e bielece a scomencin a lâ insiemi.

I venezians a Alessandrie a vevin dai privileçs particolârs pal cumierç e a vevin magazens, buteghis, dipuesits e ancje une glesie.
